Running a polka fest was a dream for me. It’s something I always wanted to do and we (myself and all the wonderful volunteers) did it for 20 years! I keep getting asked, “How long are you going to keep doing it?” My short response has always been, “Until we lose money!” Well, that’s not quite the case.
When we started 20 years ago in 2003, we were all 20 years younger, volunteers were eager, and crowds were in the thousands (believe it or not). In 2011, the crowd was down so much, we needed to discontinue our second building. After that, we have seen a steady decline in attendance year after year. Even though our volunteers are getting older, prices keep going up, and attendance declines, we’re still holding our own. We’re in the black!
It’s been a great ride and a fulfilling experience in so many ways! This was a hard decision, but with a lot of soul searching, I have decided that this year’s Beckster Fest was the last one.
A huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers that helped make it happen, to all the bands that provided the great music, the vendors that supplied food/beer, and all the wonderful people that came to support it and have fun! And have fun, we did…. for 20 years! Thank you all!
